Explorer Post 402
Are you interested in becoming a Firefighter? Do you know what Firefighters do? Do you think it is just riding around on a big truck and putting out fires? What education, training and experience is necessary to become a firefighter? How hard is the job? What is the work schedule? Will I like the job?
If you are intersted in becoming a firefighter, you probably have these and dozens more questions about finding out what firefighters do. One way of learning about this career while you are a young adult is to become a Fire Explorer.
Fire Service Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women aged 14 -21 .
Fire Service Explorer posts help youth gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers or volunteering in the field of fire service, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.
In New Milford, explorers meet Thursdays and occasional Sundays. Explorers learn about firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, vehicle extrication, water rescue, rope rescue, and much more.
We also allow explorers to ride-a-long and allow them to work with crews to help establish whether the fire service is right for them. Explorers work, train, eat and respond to calls as a member of the NMFD team. Explorers will see the many sides of the fire service, we don’t just fight fires, be prepared to work hard and see many things.
Safety is our paramount concern; we cannot help others if we become injured ourselves. Explorers are always supervised by experienced firefighters and are not allowed to enter burning structures or participate in highly dangerous activities. Firefighting is inherently dangerous and we are committed to operating in a safe effective manner.
For those explorers who choose a career or volunteer in the fire service our program gives them a head start. For those who choose something else, they receive excellent teamwork, communication and leadership skills to help them succeed for the rest of their lives.
Scholarships available to explorers:
- IAFCF Scholarship (Fire Service, $500)
- The International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation coordinates a yearly $500 scholarship program to assist Explorers in pursuing a career in the fire sciences.
