Working Apartment fire

At approximately 11:35pm this past Friday night, NMFD responded for the reported heavy smoke condition in the 2nd floor apartment on the 700 block of Columbia Street. Chief 301 arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire in a 2 story garden apartment and requested a fast team from Dumont Fire Department.  Engine 32(Acting Engine 33) was first due and stretched a line to the affected apartment. A secondary line was stretched to the front door. Interior crews opened up the walls and found a small fire in the wall which was quickly knocked down. Additional manpower arrived on scene and checked the adjacent apartments for extension. All searches were found negative. NMFD was assisted on scene by Oradell Fire Deparment, Dumont FD, and New Milford Volunteer Ambulance Corps. A feline was removed to safety from the adjacent apartment by FF Daniel Drew. Crews operated on scene for approx. 1 and a half hours.

Adopt a Fire Hydrant

If your house is on fire, time is critical. With winter on the horizon, there's a very real possibility your neighborhood's local fire hydrant will be snowed in. Last winter, most fire hydrants throughout the town were either covered or poorly tended to. The time it would take for the fire department to dig out the hydrant can cost valuable minutes in securing a water supply. As such, the fire department requests that residents who have fire hydrants on or near their property clear it following snowfall.
Also, the borough has an "Adopt-A-Hydrant" program in place. Individuals interested in the program should call 201-967-7067 or Click Here.
